I have been losing many beautiful things as I settle my divorce, which will include my idyllic rural home, pond and land. For all that I have and will lose, I have found something much more important and that is an embracement of Judiasm. As a child of 2nd generation intermarriage, of diaspora, one might think that would be lost as well, but instead the spark, Pintele Yid, has been ignited. My beautiful "house" is now the House of Israel, where I am protected 24/7 by a guardian that never sleeps. You can't do better than that!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-984262978136277646.post-23388145725797153112011-10-29T11:09:04.165-07:002011-10-29T11:09:04.165-07:00So glad you're back. I just found out that each of us in our bnei mitzvah class is going to have to do a short speech on Vayislach, so I'm glad I have already been exposed to it.

In doing my homework, I came across the following:
In Genesis 34:3, the heart is enticed. A midrash catalogued the wide range of additional capabilities of the heart reported in the Hebrew Bible. The heart speaks (Ecclesiastes 1:16), sees (Ecclesiastes 1:16), hears (1 Kings 3:9), walks (2 Kings 5:26), falls (1 Samuel 17:32), stands (Ezekiel 22:14), etc. etc.

Can you tell me where I can find that midrash? I stumbled across it once before and despaired of finding it again. I think it would be a great (and hopelessly ambitious) songwriting project for me to try to compose a song for each one.

Snowing here! The Biblical situation is more clear cut, might makes right, my God is more powerful than yours and the victors wrote the history. As we get to the end of Numbers and into Deuteronomy we will see how this plays out. Of course if we have ever explore the books of Joshua and the Kings we will see more and more political turmoil, fights and conflicts. Who needs action films when we have Biblical drama?TorahThreadshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15298611722674138047noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-984262978136277646.post-10212484811876069162011-07-19T05:53:45.038-07:002011-07-19T05:53:45.038-07:00This week we have one of many stories that are tro...This week we have one of many stories that are troubling to those of us who are looking for a God of peace and mercy. The "vengeful God" of the Torah is hard to reconcile with the God we pray to as the source of peace.
I remember as a teenager opposed to the Vietnam War, Christian teachings about peace were often cited (e.g. Blessed are the peacemakers...). Of course, Christian theology was also used as justification for the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, etc. etc.
But as Rabbi Winnig always points out, Biblical times are not like today. Our ancestors lived in a tough neighborhood and sometimes you can't choose your battles.
What happens if we apply principles from Biblical times directly to contemporary life? Were the Jews of 1948 or 1967 justified in taking the land from those who previously lived there for generations? Why should other tribes and nations have to recognize our claim to Eretz Yisrael?Glennhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07930962349714290004noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-984262978136277646.post-71133817244067862192011-07-17T06:59:42.140-07:002011-07-17T06:59:42.140-07:00Thanks so much for your good wishes! Thanks so much for your good wishes!TorahThreadshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15298611722674138047noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-984262978136277646.post-25027557310707102132011-07-13T09:52:43.173-07:002011-07-13T09:52:43.173-07:00I'm glad you're back and healthy. The father needs to bond with the male baby, who is allowed out into the world immediately. The father might be jealous of the mothers infatuation with the male baby. The mother needs to protect the female baby, who is less vulnerable and less prized, at least to most of the males. So she gets more time to bond with her mother. Just a thought!

Hope you are well.

EdenEden Steinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07923194643351640581noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-984262978136277646.post-24848443722224480842011-03-13T08:47:44.755-07:002011-03-13T08:47:44.755-07:00In the building of the Tabernacle as described in ...In the building of the Tabernacle as described in the the last four Parashahs of Shemos (Exodus) G-d commanded that Shittim (Acacia wood) be used for the Ark, table, carrying poles and support beams. Since the Jews were in the desert where nothing grows, as Rashi points out, the only way they could have had the wood available was if they carried it from Egypt. Thus, Rashi concluded that Jacob brought seedling Acacia trees from Canaan and transplanted them in Goshen in anticipation of the need to fulfill the Mitzvah of building the Tabernacle. So it appears that Shittim wood was part of the plan and when called for, the lumber was prepared and ready. The Acacia tree has a rough exterior with a thick homely bark and long sharp thorns growing out of its branches while sporting lush green leaves and beautiful flowers at certain times of the year. Thus in order to make this tree suitable for such Holy service the rough exterior has to be peeled off and the wood must be smoothed over with an abrasive cloth. This procedure is called refinement and it indeed is a painful process. But, when we apply this principle to ourselves we can see that every hardship we endure individually and as a nation is a gift because with every moment of suffering HaShem brings us closer to the eternal rapture of basking in His G-dly light.Moshe Sharonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13390504237263926956noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-984262978136277646.post-25304968834014340172011-02-11T14:08:43.128-08:002011-02-11T14:08:43.128-08:00Dear Eden:
